When teeth are missing due to decay or trauma, it is difficult to chew properly or to speak easily. Missing teeth may compromise a person’s appearance and smile, reducing their confidence and making them self-conscious. Dentures are custom-made prosthetic dental appliances that are designed to replace missing teeth and restore the normal function of the mouth. When missing teeth are not replaced or treated in any way, other teeth may move or shift to compensate for the gaps that are created, changing the bite. The face may have a shrunken appearance, and the overall structure of the mouth may be weakened. Dentures are a good way to replace missing teeth and restore your confidence and ability to chew and eat a healthy diet.

Full and Partial Dentures

Depending on how many teeth are missing, you may need full or partial dentures. If many or all teeth are missing, a full set of dentures is appropriate. A full set of dentures is made of a plastic base that is designed to resemble natural gums along with a full set of artificial teeth. The teeth may be composed of porcelain or plastic. The dentures are removable and, when being used, are held in place by natural suction, forming a seal with the gums.

When only a few teeth are missing, partial dentures can be made. Like full dentures, partial dentures have a plastic base or may have a frame made of metal. Clasps that are attached hold the partial denture in place. Dentures are made about eight to twelve weeks after the teeth are lost to allow the gum tissue to heal and the tooth socket to become stable. Impressions are made of the patient’s mouth so that the dentures can be made in a laboratory.

Implant Supported and All On Four Dentures

Many patients are choosing to get dental implants or implant supported dentures as an alternative to traditional dentures. Implants are metal (usually titanium) posts that are inserted into the bone of the jaw. A crown is then placed over the implant to create a new tooth. This can also be done to create a denture by using several implants that are strategically placed to support a group of artificial teeth. An example of this is the All-On-Four dental implant procedure that uses four dental implants as the base for an entire upper or lower set of teeth. The implants eventually fuse with the jaw bone and provide a strong base of support for the artificial teeth, which need never be removed and can last for many years.
