Finding a family dentist whom you can go to for regular checkups is such an important part of maintaining your dental health for a lifetime. These regular checkups work to help manage your overall oral health, and it prevents severe problems from developing and saves you time, money, and pain in the long run. It helps you to be confident in your appearance and enables you to eat fresh, nutritious foods. Besides, visits to the dentist need not be unpleasant, especially when you have a caring team who wants to support you as you ensure good oral health for you and your family.  At Hilltop Dental of Agoura Hills, California, Dr. George B. Apelian, DDS and his professional staff are dedicated to helping you achieve dental health that lasts a lifetime.

Your smile is something people notice when they meet you for the first time. As we age, wear and tear on our teeth from acidic foods, decay, or even trauma can change their color or cause unsightly chips and cracks in teeth that were once beautiful. This can undermine the confidence we have in ourselves and make us less likely to smile often, do not have high self-esteem in social situations, and can even serve to prevent us from the ideas to pursue our goals and dreams. A cosmetic dentist can repair many of these issues non-invasively and painlessly, making a smile more naturally beautiful once again.

But cosmetic dentistry isn’t just about appearance. Cosmetic dentists also consider the overall dental health of the patient when planning cosmetic dental interventions. At Hilltop Dental, we practice responsible aesthetics. This means that we’re concerned about more than just how the patient looks when we’re through with treatment. The cosmetic dentistry treatments we offer are evidence-based and are designed to enhance your long-term dental health.

Over the course of our life, if you’ve lost one or more teeth and are not looking forward to the possibility of having dentures or bridges, you may want to consider the option of using dental implants. These implants are very small posts made of titanium, which is a biocompatible metallic element that is non-toxic to the human body. These posts act as artificial tooth roots that provide a strong foundation for new teeth. These posts fuse with the jawbone over a period of a few months. Then, either a single tooth or multiple teeth can be placed over the implant, in order that your smile looks like new!

Dental implants have many advantages over traditional dentures or bridges. With implants, your teeth are firmly in place and do not slip, and in this way, you will not have difficulty with speaking, chewing, or eating going forward. Getting dental implants also does not involve reducing other teeth, as is sometimes necessary with a bridge. Dental implants also need no adhesives, nor do they need to be removed, and they will last for many years. If cared for properly, they can last a lifetime.

Over time, teeth can be stained as we eat the foods we love and drink the beverages that make our mornings better, such as dark roasted coffee and flavored hot or cold teas. Much like the skin, the teeth are able to absorb substances that pass through the area around the mouth, which can stain the teeth, promoting varying degrees of discoloration. Professional whitening of teeth uses substances that are able to act on these pores to lift out any yellow or brown stains. This safe and painless process does not damage the teeth and can bring back the natural, pearly appearance that they once had from years ago.

A dentist at Hilltop Dental who does professional teeth whitening has the latest and most effective equipment for this type of treatment. The custom-fitted gel delivery tray allows the whitening product to reach the whole tooth so that corners and other areas of the tooth do not remain stained. Using products at home may work. Still, there’s always a risk that something will go wrong when the treatment is delivered by inexperienced people who are not trained on how to prevent losing enamel, whitening teeth, or generally knowing the true properties of human teeth. For better results, professional teeth whitening is a great choice and it is highly recommended to improve the luster and whiteness of your teeth right now.

When you’re not satisfied with the appearance of your smile, a smile makeover is an option that you may want to consider to improve your smile and how you look. When you visit a professional cosmetic dentist, you and that dentist can sit down together and review what you don’t like about your smile, and then create a treatment plan that works for you. In this situation, the use of veneers, Invisalign, dental implants, and whitening are all tools that can be used to create a more beautiful and healthier looking smile.

There are many ways in which the appearance of a tooth can be compromised throughout life. The teeth can grow to be out of proportion with one another, or they can become badly stained, cracked, or chipped, with too much wear causing them to be shortened or with too much of the gum showing. Many times, oral health problems come up over time, and with a busy life and schedule, these issues are not attended to when they first start to occur. To this end, problems like this can be corrected with a smile makeover, which can add to your appearance and confidence.

When a patient comes to the dentist after years of neglecting his or her teeth or after a dental trauma or long illness that has resulted in decay or damage to the teeth, a full mouth reconstruction may be a good option to consider to restore the teeth to a better look. A full mouth reconstruction is a comprehensive dental treatment plan that is designed to address multiple dental problems as part of one broad plan that is implemented over time. The goal of a full mouth reconstruction is to recreate a state of dental health and to enable the patient to have more functional and beautiful teeth.

Having a full mouth reconstruction with an experienced professional dentist can save you a lot of time and money. Since the work can all be done in one place, you can avoid making trips all over town for different kinds of dental procedures, and the work can be done as one whole project that addresses all of your dental needs in a well-orchestrated way that suits the patient’s needs. All of the pertinent and related dental issues, like gum treatment, orthodontic issues, and restorative and cosmetic problems, can be treated within the same treatment plan so that the treatment all work together to give you the best possible results.

What will happen on my first visit to the office?

What is a comprehensive treatment plan?

A comprehensive treatment plan is a complete recommended plan including procedures or treatment recommended by the dentist for all your dental needs.

What causes tooth decay?

Various factors such as eating, drinking liquids and smoking can cause plaque which can stick to your teeth. Plaque is made of bacteria which produces acid from the food. If and when that acid attacks your teeth repeatedly, it can eat away the tooth enamel and cause tooth decay. Only a dentist can treat tooth decay and restore your tooth. Brushing your teeth twice a day and cleaning between your teeth at least once daily to remove plaque can help prevent tooth decay. Unfortunately, toothbrush bristles cannot get into the deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of premolars and molars (back teeth), which allows plaque to collect in these areas. Because these surfaces grind the food we eat, they are at high risk of developing tooth decay.

How often should I change my toothbrush?

Dental professionals recommend replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months. If the bristles are frayed, you likely have to change the brush much sooner.

Do Root Canals Hurt?

You do not have to worry about pain and discomfort associated with root canals. In most cases the pain is far worse prior to a root canal as the tooth pulp may be infected or severely calcified. The actual pain gradually subsides once the root canal is completed. With local anesthetics the actual procedure is not painful. When requiring a root canal however can cause some to severe discomfort.
